
About Kanha National Park:
Stretched over an area of 940 sq km, Kanha National Park is situated between the mountain peaks of Majkal and Satpura and is home to a wide variety of animal life.
This region acquired the status of a sanctuary in the year 1955, which got the status of a tiger reserve in 1974. Animals like tiger, gaur, bison, sambar, chital, black buck, barasingha, leopard, barking deer and many more can be spotted here. The park also has endangered species like the swamp deer and is home to a huge variety of birds.
Kanha is known for its towering trees, vast grazing lands, sparkling streams and groves of wild bamboo. This park also has a huge variety of flora that includes some 600 plants. The two streams named Banjar and Halon flow through the park and act as a reservoir.
The ideal time to visit the region is around February to April and November to June and the best time to go to the park would be around dawn and in the evening, 4:00 pm onwards till dusk sets in.
Best Season / Best Time to Visit Kanha:
- Kanha is a National Park and a Tiger Reserve in the Mandla and Balaghat districts of the state of Madhya Pradesh. The climate in Kanha is extreme and tropical.
- Summer is very hot summer season and winter is chilly, while monsoon brings in heavy rainfall.
- The summer season starts around April and continues till June, and during this time the weather gets quite hot. During the months of May to July, the temperatures soar and the maximum temperature rises to around 43 degree Celsius. The average summer temperature ranges between a maximum of 40-43 degree Celsius to a minimum of 30 degree Celsius.
- The monsoons arrive here around July and stays till September. Kanha receives heavy rains during the rainy season. The place receives an average of 1,800 mm of rain falls annually, and the maximum rainfall occurs during the months of July and August. This is not a good time for tourists to visit the place as there is water everywhere in the forest and the park remains closed.
- The winter season in Kanha starts by end-November and continues till February. Winter here is severe and chilly with the temperature touching as low as 2 degree Celsius. The average winter temperature ranges between a maximum of 20 degree Celsius to a minimum of 2 degree Celsius.
- The best season to visit Kanha is between the months of October to June. The months of March to June is the ideal time for sightings of animals since the grass remains low ensuring better visibility of the wild animals. The weather during this season is pleasant though it does get hot especially during the months of May and June. December to February is also a good time to come to Kanha and tourists can enjoy the winter chill and the beauty of the surrounding snow-capped mountains, while experiencing the wilderness.
Getting there:
- Nearest airport is at Jabalpur (156 km.), connected with regular flights from Delhi & Bhopal.
- Kanha does not have a train station, and the nearest station is Jabalpur, at a distance of 99 kms from Kanha. Most convenient railheads are at Jabalpur and Bilaspur.
- Daily bus service available for Kisli and Mukki from Jabalpur and back. Taxis are available for hire from Jabalpur, Bilaspur and Raipur. Vehicles are not permitted within the park after dark.
